Folgefonna 2003

2003-07-28 - Sundal – Fonnabu
The earliest wakeup this week! The car was steering towards Sundal through the 11 km tunnel below the glacier, Folgefonna. The sun was shining and we played music from Per Gessle in the car. We parked in the beautiful Bondhusdalen. The hike began on gravel road and after a while we noticed a warning sign which says: loose bullocks. If you have fear for these animals you should look out. But we were lucky, they didn’t hunted us.

The path twists through the jungle until the open mountain terrain appeared. There were lots of bilberry around the hut were we took a break.

During the next kilometers we were guided by some sheep in the flat terrain. There are many sheep that wanted to be the first on the track. When the hills became steeper and the wind increased it was time to put on a windbreaker. A pair of skies from Fischer was found under a cliff. What a hell are they doing here? Has the owner a gps fastened to the skies, it can’t be easy to find them berried in the snow.

On a hill we could see the Breidablikk hut, it looked really small. Perhaps it’s a hut where we can buy waffles, it would be nice! To reach the hut we had to pass a snowfield and then further uphill among the stones. When we stepped into the hut it was extremely small with just two beds and a small kitchen. No waffles so far but we had some crisp bread left.
We had some nice views over the glacier up towards Fonnabu but the cold winds made it chilly. We had been on our way for about 4.5 hours so we just took a short visit in the cottage with some chocolate. We could also see Holmaskjera far away to the north from the cottage.

On our way down after the snow we took a short stop with some lunch. The sun was shining and made everything comfortable. But bad weather was coming in and we rapidly finished our meal before the rain starts to fall. We met a guide from Bergen and asked him if it rained almost as much here as in Bergen. According to him it rained twice as much here at Folgefonna than in Bergen. That’s way we hade so much rain.

At half past seven we reached the car and drove to the camp at Sundal. We put up the tent just behind the dock and it looks like this camp is well known for it’s fishing opportunities. After a short rain shower we had a lovely sun and blue skies. Nice nature with Maurangerfjorden and the high mountain sides as closest neighbor …Could it be better? One guy offered us to buy some fish but nothing beats pasta!

No more Yatzy in the future. I think we better play some cards…
