2001-07-17 - Falketind
We were not so spirited this morning. The 12 hour walk yesterday had done some things to us so we waited until 10 am before we walked away. But if you have vacation that's no problem. Todays adventure was Falketind a peak that we could see from our tent. It really impressed us all with it's pointed peak in the sunny weather. We walked around the lake Koldevatnet and got a slow start on the gravel road. It was a slight hill into the vally Morka-Koldedalen. Now it became more stony on the ground.

When the first lake was passed we had to walk in a steep hillside. Normally you'll meet snow here but this year the entire Jotunheimen had less snow. We pass the northside of the lake and walk over some snowfields and we have to hold our ice axe ready. Who want's to stumble down into the ice cold water? At the end of the lake there was a large snow field so we had to round it upwards. With the snow edge to the left we walk in loose stones and finally we had to pass under the snow over to the other side. A walk over a large stone field took us further to the next lake. We followed the second lake until we passed the small river. Now we had a long and hard hill to climb in the hot sun. The hill became very steep halfway up and we had to use our arms to get up. Finally when we stood at the glacier edge the weather turns from sun into rain with a cold wind. But a good tasting meal made us warm again.

We could from here actually see the blue ice from Stölsnosbreen. Nice. The glacier were steeper today compared with yesterday. We round a bit on the left side and today we walked with ice treks because of the slippery ground. It's unbelivable that it takes so long to put on the ice trek. Foot steps in the snow unveiled that someone had walked here the last days. The sun was on a good mood and it was warm to walk in loose snow. When we reached the plateau and saw the peak and the steep down to Falkbreen it was really lovely. Just before the last snow hill we disconnect the rope. With lot of lactic acid in our legs we climb among the rocks and finally we can see the peak. The views are just georgeous. The three champagne corks who were stucked between some rocks revealed some celebrations. But we were satisfied with some danish water!

Downhill in the same foot steps. We had a short break with some bread after we finished the glacier. And then we had to pass the steep hill down to the lake. Now we had a long leg with the lakes to the right. All of us felt very tired and we just walked and walked. We saw the tent and the time was about 10pm. After a cold bath in a brook we made us a three-course dinner as usual. The evening was completed with peanuts and some cold liquids.
